Concert in Lisbon Church

This regular event returns to Lisbon for the holiday season in 2009: Concerts in Churches, instigated by the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa (Lisbon City Hall) through its Cultural division, is a yearly event which returns to Lisbon next week, and which offers free entrance to several concerts held in Lisbon’s churches.

This event starts on 6th December, the day of St. Nicholas, and goes on until the 20th December, with a mostly religious repertoire performed by the Associação Musical Lisboa Cantat, the Orquestra Sinfónica Juvenil, the Coro Infantil Regina Coeli and the group Shout, amongst others.

Visual Street Performance, Lisbon 2009

Visual Street Performance (VSP), now in its 5th Edition, is the largest Street Art event in Portugal, which this year will take place simultaneously in Libon and Oporto.

It involves a collective exhibition and parallel activities with music, painting sessions, and graffiti events with specially invited artists from Portugal and abroad. There will also be debates, films and, for the first time, a “chalk battle” open to all those who wish to take part.

The objective of the VSP collective is to extend the workspace of these urban artists within both indoor and outdoor areas in order to develop and explore new technical and artistic possibilities. It also promotes their work to a wider public, now that urban art is truly a global phenomenon, in order to share experiences and results.

The first VSP exhibition was in 2005 in the old Interpress building in Bairro Alto, and it immediately became a benchmark for urban art in Portugal. Through the work of the VSP members, the legitimate existence of graffiti was recognised as an artistic activity in indoor environments, allowing for dialogue with a wider audience.

Several yearly editions succeeded this first event, in 2006 still in the Interpress building, and in 2007 in the Braço de Prata factory. During this 2007 edition, space was given to proposals of both individual and collective creativity in different media, from mural painting to photography, and including graphic expression and object personalization. A book was also launched, “Visual Street Performance”, a first serious attempt to publish information about the collective.

Visual Street Performance takes place from 26th November to 13th December in the Escola Primária school in Rua das Gaivotas. It is open on Monday, Thursday, Friday from 6pm to 2am, Saturdays from 3pm to 2am and Sundays and holidays from 3pm to 11pm.

Films are shown on Sundays and holidays from 7pm to 9:30pm and live painting takes place throughout the event.

1. LISBOA MÁGICA – Street Magic World Festival 2009

Rua da Mouraria, Anonymous, 1898 - 1908

From 10th September to the 23rd October, this photographic exhibition will be showing the work of 5 photographers: Georges Dussaud, Luís Pavão, Luísa Ferreira, Camilla Watson and Carlos Morganho.

The exhibition will be held in the Photographic Section of the Lisbon Municipal Archive (Arquivo Municipal de Lisboa – Arquivo Fotográfico), located at Rua da Palma 246, close to the Martim Moniz square and just a short walking distance from our Duplex Mouraria Apartment. It will show photos of the Mouraria district from the early 20th Century until today.

This photographic archive contains approximately 600,000 images, of which 93,000 are digitalised and available for public viewing.

The collection has immense value as a homage to the history of Lisbon, as it documents all aspects of the city – urban, architectural, social, political, personal – and also to the history of photography in Portugal, due to the photohraphers represented and also the photographic processes maintained there since 1850.

The exhibition will be inaugurated on 10th September at 6pm and will run every day from 10am to 6:30pm (12-13 September, 11am – 8pm. 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, 10am to 5:30pm).

Street Magic Festival, Lisbon

The 4th edition of LISBOA MÁGICA – Street Magic World Festival starts today and goes on until 30th August. The festival is organised by the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa (Lisbon’s City Hall) with the magician Luís de Matos acting as Artistic Director.

During this festival the city of Lisbon will be invaded by magicians and street artists who will produce their magic over 6 days in 9 different places in Lisbon’s “Baixa” or downtown area.

The magicians come from far and wide, with participants from Canada, Spain, England, Germany, Holland, France, USA and Portugal, including the following: Billy Kidd, Civic Civiac, David Williamson, Enric Magoo, Gazzo, Jan Van Kammen, Kayto, Ken, Luke Wilson, Mário Daniel, Myster Yurgen, Peter Wardell, Ramana, Richard Mcdougall, Silly Billy.

In order to see any of these street shows, you’ll need to go to one of the following areas: Largo de Camões, Largo do Chiado, Rua Augusta (next to the large arch), Rua Garret, Praça da Figueira, Largo 1º de Dezembro, Praça do Teatro S. Carlos, Largo de São Domingos or the Rossio square.
