"Very nice apartment with a perfect situation"
If you're interested in the authentic Lisbon, choose this apartment. The situation, in alfama Quartier is perfect. The apartment is so nice, with all the facilities that you can need. Roger is very friendly and he always has helped us before and in our arrival.

Danika Stevenson (2 adults, 6 - 9 July, 2011):

"A great little place in the old town"
We loved our stay in Roger's apartment! So close to everything and fantastic views over alfama and the river. Clean and cosy with everything you need for a stay in Lisbon. Apart from my husband's repeated bashing of head on the bedroom ceiling (after the first time, it surely was his fault?) it was a thoroughly comfortable stay!

CUSTOMER COMMENTS & REVIEWS

Rachel Morgan (2 adults, 10 - 12 June, 2011):

Fab - friendly neighbours, great transport links, no car noise,
We stayed here for 2 nights on 10th and 11th June. Roger met us very promptly and was very helpful - it's a lovely way to start off your stay when the owner is genuinely friendly and happy to welcome you.
The apartment is located a minute below the relaxed bustle and cafes of the Portas Do Sol viewpoint, and fabulous world of tram 28. Being in the alfama this place is of course on a hill and has steep stairs - it was fine for us but someone with bad knees or hips could struggle. Anyone coming to Lisbon who's done any sort of research should already know it's a hilly city though. The apartment is situated in a traffic-free area. You can hear birdsong at certain times of day, and then just the neighbours going about their business and tourists passing through. It's a lovely, very recently and well restored typical alfama apartment, and there was a really nice, safe atmosphere both in the day and at night.
The apartment itself has a very well kitted out kitchen with everything you need, even cling film and foil. There is a small bathroom which again has everything you need. There is an adaptor (In the kitchen cupboard) for charging UK electric toothbrushes and razors. Good proper hairdryer as well. The shower is not the biggest, again may be a problem for someone with limited mobility. I say this as someone who used to have severe back problems. The bed is amazing - in the top 2 I've ever slept on, the other being in a £500/night safari lodge so it really is exceptional. It's a 7ft diameter round bed and Roger and Paula really have gone for quality here. There is also a proper velux blind on the window to keep the sun and heat out, and a very good air conditioning system - for once not above the bed so you don't end up with an icy blast as you sleep. And it's quiet so it won't keep you awake! The view out of the bedroom window is beautiful - taking in Sao Vicente Church to the left and sweeping views of the Tagus and alfama below. I am told by my boyfriend that if you open the velux fully, you can get a lovely tan indoors while your partner is getting ready to go out! There is a load of info in the TV cabinet including maps and info, even down to where to buy tickets and where the nearest supermarket is. There are lovely wooden floors throughout.
A couple of things worth noting:
Ceiling height in the bedroom is low - it is in an attic. The centre of the room is normal height but the size of the bed means you tend to walk in the sloped areas. Not perhaps quite so good for those of you over 6'1.
Judging by previous experience, daytime and distance to the nearest bars, this is an idyllic quiet spot where you just hear the residents going around. However if you come in festival season, be prepared!!! The alfama was throbbing with life the 2 nights we were there for the festival of St anthony, which culminated this year on the 12th with parades, more parties and just full on celebrations. It was a brilliant experience with impromptu bars and barbecues on nearly every street corner. The smell was absolutely beautiful with probably hundreds of sardines and chouricao being cooked in every direction. The place was buzzing with the sounds of street parties and live music, so we decided to join in and had a fantastic time. Some of the partying down the hill went on until 4:30am though which did keep my boyfriend awake when we turned in. However this is not the nor. I've been to Lisbon 3 times and have never seen alfama and Portas Do Sol like this. Just check your dates first - but in our case it was a brilliant surprise and just added to the experience of being in this beautiful, vibrant city.
My only gripe with cleanliness was down the side of the shower - it just needs someone to take a pipe cleaner to it. The rest of the flat was immaculately clean. Roger was on hand if we needed anything and we would recommend this place to able bodied friends and family without hesitation.

Soizic Perrugault (2 adults, 31 May - 2 June, 2011):

Perfect for 2 nights in Lisbon with my wife
We came to visit Lisbon from tuesday 31th may to thursday 1st june. We received mails before to organize our arrival and a very sympathic woman gave us the keys and showed us the appartment. The duplex is perfectly located in alafama. We only travel by walking or by train, and it's very easy from this starting point. It is quiet, neighboors are prevenant and there is not pub or restaurant with noise juste under. We used the kitchen to prepare our food and let some products we can't finish. The bed is perfect and the view is really agreable from the room. The duplex is clean and the equipments are efficient. There is plenty of agreable details so we missed nothing. And by SMS, we needed to find deposits after we left, and Roger gave us information. We recommand this appartment to our family and friends because it is really a good surprise. Saraha & Ed Bridges (2 adults, 22 - 30 May, 2011):

A great stay in alfama
For our first time in Lisbon we wanted to stay in an apartment, and found this one to be well located, cosy and clean - exactly what we were looking for. Roger was very helpful at check in, and was flexible with our difficult flight times! It was good to know that if we'd needed help at any point during the week there was someone we could ring who would be able to give assistance. As it was, everything went swimmingly - no problems with the apartment (except my husband banging his head on the low bedroom ceiling a few times!), a great location, friendly neighbours, and easy check in and out. In short, we had a great stay in this lovely apartment - we would definitely recommend this to friends.

Rolande Valadie (2 adults, 5 - 12 May, 2011):

Wonderful discovery of Lisbon from a very well situated flat
The cosiness of the apartment in a very central district with all sorts of interesting visits(castelo,monastery,museums...)"cheap and cheerful" restaurants, typical atmosphere made our stay a treat

Nick Jenkins (3 adults, 29 April - 2 May, 2011):

Great spot in a fantastic city!
Three of us stayed in the alfama apartment and had such a wonderful time we'll be back for sure! Roger met us in the pouring rain (what a great host!) and checked us in swiftly, showed us around and gave us a few tips. The apartment was spotless and had everything you'd need no matter if you were there a night or a month. It is quite small, and the main bedroom has a low ceiling but at 5'11 I managed ok - besides you are staying in the same kind of accomodation as the little old men and ladies of Lisbon. The main square is within walking distance and the trams stop 30 seconds away at a small square with a great little outdoor cafe/bar with the best panoramic views. There's also plenty or cute resturants and shops etc nearby and the castle a short stroll up hill. We loved our apartment and will be back to Lison for sure. We were so impressed we've even looked at realestate there for a holiday home! If you consider this apartment just book it - you'll be impressed and Roger won't let you down!

Martine Martinez (2 adults, 9 - 14 April, 2011):

appartement confortable et bien situé
Appartement très agréable, refait à neuf, bien équipé,bien situé,offrant une vue imprenable sur la mer de paille et Lisbonne.L'accueil est chaleureux . Seul l'escalier d'accès est un peu difficile.
TRANSLATION: Comfortable and well located
Very pleasant apartment, renovated, well equipped, well located, offering breathtaking views over the Mar da Palha (Tagus Estuary) and Lisbon. The welcome is warm. Only the staircase is a bit difficult.

Malgorzata Fereniec (2 adults, 1 - 6 April, 2011):

Perfect for short- trip
Very, very good location and nice host and neighbour.

Russell Davis (2 adults, 28 - 31 March, 2011):

Exactly what we wanted
The location was perfect, right in alfama, just 100 yards or less from the porto del sol. Clean, bright apartment. Roger was very helpful. The round king bed was a blast. Views from the open skylight were excellent. Great if you want to get off the beaten tourist. Not recommended unless you can climb stairs.

Michael Ford (2 adults, 16 - 21 March, 2011):

Dear Roger,
Obrigado! Many thanks for allowing us to stay in your lovely apartment.
Michael & Erika

Mel Myland (2 adults, 3 - 8 February, 2011):

First of all I must say we will definatly recomend it to friends and family. We had a wonderful 5 days in Lisbon (our first time) and an important part of what made it so good was the location and comfortable situation of the appartment. Everthing was clean, tidy and ready for us when we arrived, the appartment has been very tastfully renovated and is obviously well looked after. (a bit too much clutter with all the vases and nik-naks, we would rather have the empty space to deposite our own bits and pieces, but obviously tastes differ).
Even though we did have one night of very noisy old ladies (that was a new one on me) we did like the fact that we were living in a house with local residents and not "just" holiday makers. This gave it a much more authentic feel, and it was quite a novelty to see the same old lady grilling sardines in the lane outside the front door one day. I am sure that if we could speak a few words of Porugese we would have got on with her like a house on fire, so our failing, not hers.
We would book the appartment again next time we go to Lisbon, or try one of your other appartments, as you obviously care about the appatments and the comfort of your guests.

Carla Martinez (2 adults, 26 - 30 December, 2010):

We did very much enjoy our visit to Lisbon and our stay at your place. The apartment is very nice and convenient, it was very clean and very well taken care of.

Andreas Redl (2 adults, 26 - 28 November, 2010):

Patrick Bertrand (4 adults, 6 - 9 November, 2010):

Merci pour votre accueil. Appartement très bien situé, pratique, agréable avec de magnifiques lever et coucher de soleil sur le Tage. Lisbonne une ville au charme infini ou nous reviendrons Cordialement, Patrick.

TRANSLATION: Thank you for your welcome. The apartment is very well located, convenient, and pleasant with a beautiful sunrise and sunset over the Tagus. Lisbon is a city with endless charm and we will return. Regards, Patrick.

Remarks: Das Apartment war sehr gemütlich, wir haben uns gleich wie zuhause gefühlt. Die ruhige Lage aber doch mitten drin im Leben des Stadtteiles.

Clare Mulgan (2 adults, 15 - 18 October, 2010):

We very much enjoyed our stay in the apartment and found everything very satisfactory. It took a little while to find out how to turn on the halogen hob as we had not used one before. The velux window in the bedroom did not stay open , which was not a problem , but possibly could be if the weather was hotter. The apartment has everything you need for a short break and is in an excellent location for exploring Alfama and the rest of the city.

Our reply:
Hi Clare,
Yes, we discovered that the velux skylight needed a small fix, which has since been taken care of, but in any case there is also the air-conditioning. Thanks very much for your comments.

Catherine Lesellier (2 adults & 2 children, 27 - 30 Agosto, 2010):

Yes we really enjoyed Lisbon and your apartment. I have nothing special to say about your apartment it is very nice, tastefully furnished, well locatedin Alfama. I am an architect by trade and I really have nothing to say about your apartment. Everything was good and we keep your adress for a next time or for friend. Goodbye Roger and see you a next time.

Cyril Bourassin (4 adults, 13 - 17 August 2010):

hi Roger
we spent a very nice moment in your apartment.
it is very handy, clean, well located, and well furnished and equipped! (the washing machine was helful! and the parking too)
we appreciate to hang the towels out the window like the little granmother who live in the building!
neighbors were very kind with us! alfama is our favorite district of Lisbon!
this is a good adress, i'll recommend it to my friends

Olga Tioupenkina (3 adults, 7 - 10 August 2010):

thank you very much for your attention.
We spent wonderful time in Lisbon also thanks to your nice appartment.
During our travels we always look for nice typical accommodation in loco and in your case the appartment location is really fantastic.
However, allow me to advise you to put on your site the info about a perpendicular staircase in the house. It was funny for us go it up and down but for somebody it can become a problem.
Kind regards, Olga

Marlene & Jose Henriques (4 adults, 1 - 4 July 2010):

Our stay in ur apartment was great. WE felt so much at home. Thank U
Marlene & family

Ilmars Brikmanis (4 adults, 14 - 16 March 2010, Car Park space provided):

We liked apartment – clean and tidy, has everything what a traveler may need. Very good location. The only thing which was a bit unusual for us was a dwelling space. We are used to more spacious rooms. But we understand that the apartment is in a historical building. So it was just a new experience for us. Thank you. It was a nice stay in your apartment.

Anna Sobot (2 adults & 1 child, 13 - 20 February 2010):

We loved everything about the apartment. The location is amazing - just steps from the trams #28 and #12 stop if we were in the hurry, or we could walk down the beautiful narrow lanes and eventually hit the Tejo river... BTW, you should update your instructions re. public transportation to include tram #12 as well - we found it more useful to get to the airport than #28 - it takes only minute to get from the apartment to Praça de Figueira using #12, and then it's just a few steps on level ground to Rossio where Aerobus Stop is... Tram #12 doesn't come as often as #28, but it's nevertheless less crowded... and with the construction on Praça do Comércio these days, it makes sense to avoid it if possible... :)

But I digress... back to the apartment: the bed was great - plenty of space for 2 adults and a 9-yr old who loves to kick! :) We all slept well in Lisbon - the problem was getting up! :)

The kitchen was just perfect - equiped with everything one might need - most importantly, wine opener! :) We didn't use the stove and the microwave, as we were mostly away during the day - but we kept the fridge full and it was great to have a big breakfast in the morning and a glass (or 2 or 3) of vinho verde and/or porto in the evening... BTW, I hope you made use of that porto we left for you :)

And thank you so much for telling us about the wonderful Sr Fado restaurant and beaufitul people who run it, Duarte and Marina - we had an amazing evening with them and their friends... Now every time I listen to my fado CDs and one of the songs that Marina or one of the guys sang for us, I close my eyes and imagine that I am back there... it was a truly remarkable experience and I cannot thank you enough for sharing that secret with us!

Francesca Mongia (2 adults, 28 December 2009 - 4 January 2010):

We had such a great time in Lisbon, we miss our room with a view (and with a fantastic round bed...!) in Alfama. Last time we had an apartment in Barrio Alto. But Alfama is different, is more fascinating, captivating, typical, you know. And your apartment too, with its nice design and furniture (and, again, what a bed!)
We felt like it was OUR home.
Francesca (e Claudio)

My best, Ray

Paul Darby (2 adults & 1 teenager, 3 - 6 October, 2009):

We had a great stay in Lisbon and were delighted with your apartment, and the surrounding Alfama area, the bars full of character and restaurants with good food.

I have been to Lisbon a few times and the furthest I got before in the Alfama direction was the castle – little did I realise what I was missing! We would certainly try to stay in your apartment again if and when we return to Lisbon.

P.S. On the Monday afternoon we went for lunch in the restaurant beside the church just down the steps – the one with the vines growing above the outside seating area.

We knew as soon as we came in that we had made a good choice.

In a short while this was doubly confirmed as there was a group of about ten people eating at one table and amongst them was Paulo Ferreira, the Chelsea and Portugal footballer!

I had to ask the waiter discreetly just to make sure he was not a lookalike!

Do you know the restaurant I mean? And if so, can you tell me the name of it?

Our reply:
Hi Paul,

The restaurant is called Santo Antonio de Alfama, just opposite the Igreja de Santo Antonio church. The address is Beco de São Miguel 7 and the tel. number +351 218881328.

Luca Piccirilli (2 adults, 4 - 9 September, 2009):

The apartment is very nice, fully equipped and has a great location: Alfama, in the best part of it, right between Porta do Sol and all the small, narrow streets that go down through that old and fascinating quarter of Lisbon, where you can take a walk in quietness and still feel the warmth of the locals, only sometimes coming cross some other tourists like you.
Only difference is that, staying in that apartment, you do't feel like a tourist, but like a local.
And the sight is splendid and romantic.
And that's one of the best things of that location!
Besides, the owners are very nice and the price is totally competitive if compared to anonymous big hotels or even small pensions with less personality than this comfortable apartment.
Don't hesistate, go for it!

Ileana Buia (3 adults, 17 - 22 August, 2009):

Regarding the apartment, I really have nothing to complain about. It was perfect for our purpose, great location, central, not to mention very picturesques in the middle of the Lisbon Old Town, right next to one of the best Miraoudouros in town (or whatever it spells like) walking distance from most major attraction in Lisbon. All in all, great value for money, I have no hesitation in recommending it to any future Lisbon visitor.

Also, your kind assistance and patience with us was much appreciated.

Many many thanks for looking after us; really hope to have the chance to come back to Portugal; in the meantime, I'm advertising it madly to anyone in earshot.

Best Regards, Ileana

TRANSLATION: Liked about the apartment: How central it was for everything and that the apartment had every type of amenity. It's a good apartment to spend a holiday in Lisbon.

Chantal Ste Marie (2 adults & 1 infant, 25 - 28 July, 2009):

Thank you for everything! We enjoyed our stay in Lisbon and are now off to the Algarve.

The apartment was great & accommodated our needs.

All the best, Chantal, Dominic & Kaleia!

Daniel Zdolsek (2 adults & 1 child, 2 - 8 July, 2009):

First of all I want to say that we had one wonderful week in your apartment. The location was perfect, the interior was perfect, even the neighbours were... Tucked in on that little alley, it was exactly the kind of place we were looking for. A genuine Lisboa feel to it right in the middle of Alfama.

We could really tell that you had put some effort into providing everything that that your guests might need. Even though we were the first to stay there, we didn't miss anything and after the cable buy had been there to put the place online, my son had a great time watching the children's channels in the morning. We never tried the Internet but as the cabel TV worked fined I'm sure that was up and running as well. The bathroom was also really nice with that smart shower, and the bed room on the top floor with that window opening up for a beautiful view of old rooftops and the Teijo down below... I could go on for a long time like this.

We also rented a car during our week in Lisboa which we were a bit worried over would be a trouble finding parking for. But just ahead of the apartment, on Largo de as Portas do Sol, there were many options and even a garage. Traffic was a bit chaotic at first but at least I came to love it after a few days. You park wherever there is a spot and turn wherever there is no police man. Everyone seems to do exactly that and it all comes together in a perfect symphony.

The only thing we could remark on, and take this as nothing else than perhaps a good idea, is that the white paint in the apartment had a tendency to attract dirt in a funny way. I think it was just too matte and therefor dirty hands made marks in doorways and in the stairs that we had to try to wipe off. I know that this is a Southern European thing and I think it is really nice, but I remember talking to my painter about this when I had my apartment redone and he advised not to go with that matte kind of paint if children is around. Just because it tends to get black marks as soon as you touch the walls.

So, again, thank you very very much for letting us stay in your apartment. We definately hope to come back next year and spend another wonderful week or two at the same place. Please make a note on that in your calender.
