APARTMENT LOCATION

Address: Calçada do Forte, 50 - 4th Floor. 1100-256 Lisboa
GPS Coordinates: 38.713459,-9.124714
See on Google Maps: Click here

The apartment is located next to the Old Town district of Alfama, and just round the corner from the Santa Apolonia Metro & Train station.

This area has plenty of cafeterias, bars, traditional Fado restaurants, as well as the small village-type shops typical of Alfama.

In the Santa Apolonia station there is a "Pingo Doce" supermarket and just opposite the station there is a chemist's (pharmacy).

On the opposite side of the main road, next to the river, there is a large open-air carpark which charges just 4.95 euros per day.

The area is convenient for sight-seeing: you can easily walk to the central Praça do Comercio square in about 15 minutes, and the wonderful "miradouros" (viewpoints) of Alfama, like the Portas do Sol, and Miradouro Santa Luzia are just a 10 minute walk away. The majestic Panteão Nacional (National Pantheon) - where the famous Fado singer Amalia Rodrigues is buried - is just round the corner.

NOTE: This is a 4th floor apartment in an old traditional area of central Lisbon, where the buildings don't have lifts/elevators and is therefore not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with mobility problems.

CUSTOMER COMMENTS & REVIEWS

Lisa & John Goodsell (2 adults, 5 - 10 July, 2011):

"A lovely relaxing break"
My husband and I had a lovely relaxing 6 days. Apartment very easy to reach via taxi from airport, also cheap. Although we arrived late evening, we were in contact with Roger and was met by his assistant who was very helpful. Apartment lovely and clean, sofas could have been a little more comfy. Only one mirror which was in the bathroom, did need another one. There was only the two of us, which was perfect. I'm not sure how 4 adults would feel. Apartment was lovely and central, close to the Metro which was easy to use. Just be aware of the spiral, narrow staircase up to the apartment, be prepared to arrive at the front door, hot and out of breath! Lots of lovely restaurants and cafes to choose from, don't let the exterior and the outside of the restaurants put you off. Had a lovely break, weather perfect. If we return to Lisbon, we would not hesitate to contact Roger and see if the apartment is available. The view was spectacular!

Louis Blech (2 adults, 22 - 25 June, 2011):

"Very nice view and perfect living room, perfect location"
View on the river, sunrise, sunset, rooftops. Location in alfama is very good, close to station and also cause alfama is the best place to stay in Lisbon.

Lesley Andrews (2 adults, 24 - 31 May, 2011):

"Good value"
The view of the river, central location, cozy attributes were winners. We very much enjoyed our stay and would recommend the apartment to others. The kitchen is not as well lit as the rest of the apartment, but is quite workable.

Lis Bartosz (2 adults, 19 - 22 May, 2011):

Majestatic Rio Tejo just behind your window
The apartment is best for two people or a couple with two children. Pros: Excellent location - you can get quickly on your foot to the historical centre or to the metro/railway station if you want farther sightseeing. There is a grocery at the station open til 21:30, which saved our lifes after all day sightseeing. The owner of the apartment was helpfull, as there had been no former reservation we could check in few hours earlier. Cons: Be prepared for prettiness of an old house: steep stairs and strange smells. Deciding on accomodation in alfama district keep in mind that these are rather features than drawbacks. All in all in a hotel you won't have Rio Tejo visible from your bed.

Wolfgang Kirchhöfer (2 adults, 10 - 19 April, 2011):

Good choice.
We stayed the second time in the apartment. We most appreciate the good location (close to trains, metro, buses, supermarket, downtown, good and cheap restaurants in the immediate neighbourhood)and the wonderful view over the river on one side and Cristo Rei on the other. The apartment is well equipped even for frequent cookers. Well suitable for a couple plus maybe one kid.

Simone Davis (2 adults, 18 - 20 March, 2011):

A great place to stay, very comfortable!
We had a great stay at the apartment for two nights in March. Roger is very friendly and helpful and we instantly felt comfortable. The views are beautiful and its very close to heaps of cafes, restaurants and bars. We loved Lisbon and would definitely come back to stay at this great apartment.

Anna Schuster (2 adults, 25 - 27 February, 2011):

Nice panoramic view and an atmospheric environment
My best friend and I enjoyed a very nice weekend, and this apartment has contributed a large part! Very accessible and well located, the apartment is situated in a beautifully renovated and absolutely authentic building. Attention! the stairs are very steep, but you have a baby buggy, just consider it good exercise which will be completely rewarded once you're in the attic! The views of the Tagus are huge. The waves and sailing vessels to make the perfect holiday setting. But back to the apartment. We found a lovely furnished apartment with a well-equipped kitchen. Everything is very bright and friendly. In the area and within walking distance we found great Fado places, bars, flea market, mandarin tree in the middle of the sidewalk, supermarket (open 7 days a week) and absolutely friendly and helpful people. Even elderly ladies who spoke no language other than Portuguese, wanted to answer our questions :-) We were very comfortable and felt welcome and will come again!

Johanna von Arx (2 adults, 25 - 27 February, 2011):

We were looking to find a centrally located apartment to discover on a long weekend Lisbon and found this great place. It's only minutes away from the subway station and within a quite neighbourhood. We choose the top floor apartment with a great view to the river. The staircase is not recommended if you have a walking problem as they are quite steep. In return you will be rewarded with a European style decorated apartment. The kitchen supplies you fully equipped to prepare breakfast, lunch or dinner. We preferred to visit the nearby restaurants within walking distance. The owner provided us with all need to knows and where to go. We for sure will visit again. This place is highly recommended.

Tony Knowles (2 adults, 6 - 13 February, 2011):

An excellent apartment in an historic part of Lisboa.
The service and attention from Roger was second to none.He is a very helpful chap. Thanks Roger. The apartment was ideal for two of us and would be ok for 4 people as well. It is ideally placed in the historic part of Lisboa, Alfama with lovely views of the river. There were many fine amenities within a short walking distance and indeed a tapas bar right next door (no trouble at all with noise etc). The centre of Lisboa is a 15 minute walk or thereabouts with plenty of places on the way to sit and people watch whilst having a coffee. The apartment could do with another (large) mirror for the ladies and a couple of bedside cabinets to house glasses of water and early morning coffee etc. That said I would go back.

Binay Thakur (2 adults, 1 child & 1 baby, 25 - 29 December, 2010):

We had a wonderful stay in your apartment. The apartment including the kitchen had everything we needed during our stay.Internet connection was also good. It was also close to the public transport(Sta Apollonia, taxi, many buses)making it easy for us to go places. Nearest supermarket (Pingo Doce) was also near and had almost everything. Though climbing to the 4th floor for the apartment was bit challenging but it was worth for a nice river view.
Overall we liked the apartment and would happily recommend to the friends visiting Lisbon.

Jan Coppens (2 adults, 28 September - 2 October, 2010):

We had a super time in Lissabon and enjoyed the stay in the appartement very much.
Nice place, nice view , I can't think of anything bad.
I think we will come back.

Sharon Bennett (2 adults, 12 - 16 September, 2010):

We had a lovely time in Lisbon and the rest of our trip was delightful. Your apartment was gorgeous, although a long climb up, if you had forgotten anything on first trip down! The views definitely made up for this. Our last apartment in Lisbon was lovely too and the welcome basket was very much appreciated. That is the only little extra touch I would suggest. It makes one remember the apartment even more fondly. Thank you again and wish I was in Lisboa right now. Really wet and windy here!

Krzysztof Gorynski (2 adults, 2 - 9 September, 2010):

I stayed in Alfama River apartment for a week with my mother. We really enjoyed beautiful site on the river. The room was clean and well furnished with all facilities and amienties including wifi connection, and the kitchen. The location is really superb - very near Alfama district, beautiful cafes and restaurant. However If You prefer Belem or Bairro Alto districts, you need public transport - Underground or Bus. All public transport connections are very convenient - The bus station is just by a corner.
If we decide to visit Lisbon again, we would definitely go back to Alfama River Apartment. I think this is the best place to feel "Real Lisbon".

Mike Willner (2 adults, 13 - 20 August, 2010):

"Charming,relaxing,friendly and great fun."
We were pleasantly surprised by natural charm of Lisbon especially alfama. It is not at all spoilt by the commercial concessions for tourism that is usual in Europe. Beautiful enchanting local bars and restaurants meet you around every corner, this is a very well established community that is reassuringly safe to wander at any hour. The accommodation is wonderful with views across the river, the french windows afford the top floor flat a very airy feel which is complimented by very bright, modern furnishings. The flat was immaculately clean on arrival, Roger was very personable and helpful.I would highly recommend to anybody.

Bridget Lousa (2 adults & 2 children, 7 - 10 August, 2010):

Hi Roger
Thanks for the great flat - it was really comfortable.

Basile Veniel (2 adults & 2 children, 4 - 7 August, 2010):

Dear Roger,
As I said it to you in my SMS, your apartment was very pleasant. The sight was splendid, the very practical site. With regard to decoration with properly spoken, very pleasant and design… design of the apartment thought very well. While hoping to have answered your request, and if the people whom I know wish to go on Lisbon, I kept your co-ordinates.
Cordially, Basile

Madeleine Rall (2 adults, 22 - 29 July, 2010):

We had a very good time in Lisbon.
The Appartement was very nice.
The Tapasbar was our "Housebar" and we had a lot of fun.
I think it was nice that you gave your telephonenumber for calling you if there are problems. A nice Trip.
Thanks Madeleine

Jill Capuzzo & EJ Carreiro (2 adults, 1 - 4 July, 2010):

Thanks for your nice note, and thanks for the use of your apartment in Lisbon. We really enjoyed staying there and being in the Alfama district. We did try to go to hear fado at Senor Fado's on Saturday night but the place was closed so we went to another fado house across the street and had a lot of fun. We capped at the night at the bar just below the apartment, which is a great local place that you might add to your recommended neighborhood spots.
As for feedback, the apartment was really nice, spacious and well provisioned; I would recommend it to friends as a good way to visit Lisbon (and far better than the small hotel room we had in Porto a few nights ago!) The only challenge was the four flights of stairs we had to drag our luggage up. Other than that trip, the other treks up the hill from the train station and the stairs only helped prepare us for the numerous uphill journeys we've encountered throughout Portugal.
We're headed back to the states in a few days, and will really miss this wonderful country.

Brian Lamb (2 adults, 10 - 15 June, 2010):

the apartment was great, never had any problems what so ever, have said to the girlfriend about maybe coming back over at some point so will keep ur email and number handy. Thanks Again

Rose Pickles (2 adults, 24 - 28 May, 2010):

Yes, we really enjoyed our stay in Lisbon and did as much as we could in the 3 days. We went on to Alvor in the Algarve for the rest of our holiday and enjoyed that too, but it was much hotter. Great holiday, with the contrast of city and beach.
We thought the apartment was great for our needs. Loved the view, very comfy bed, only used the kitchen for breakfasts so it had everything we needed.

Philippe Desrues (2 adults, 21 - 24 May, 2010):

We had a very nice stay in Lisbon, we enjoyed it very much and the appart too, nice , clean and calm ; we can recomand it.
thanks for your welcome
Philippe and Patricia

Susan Reekie (2 adults, 10 - 17 April, 2010):

Hi Roger, arrived home yesterday after our extended stay in Lisbon!
BA put us up in the Altis Park which was a huge come down. We cannot praise your apartment enough and very quickly felt at home which we feel is really important for a short break. Apartment was exactly as you described even the stairs but it is well worth the climb for such a beautiful view over the river and the Alfama. We very quickly warmed to the Alfama and its people. Your advice to visit Sr Fado, was well worth it and the little bar next door was very welcoming too. Really appreciated your quick response whilst requesting an extra night and would loved to have stayed longer.
Thanks again and hope to return one day, Susan and John

Liz Fincham (2 adults, 27 March - 3 April, 2010):

We really enjoyed the apartment, especially when the weather was good and we could open up the windows. Everything was well set up providing everything we could have needed; when the evenings were chilly the heaters were very effective. The supermarket had everything in it that we needed and the fresh produce was of a good quality. Only suggestion I could make was that a chopping board in the kitchen may have been useful, I couldn't find one, but it didn't hamper our enjoyment in any way. We even got used to the stairs!
Our reply:
Don't know what happened to the previous chopping board, but we have now replaced it.

Virginie Rigaud (2 adults, 12 - 15 March, 2010):

We were very happy to stay in your apartment. It is very well located, well equiped and very luminous (except the kitchen).
Thank you

Our reply:
Thanks for your comments - we will take a look at the kitchen to see if stronger light bulbs are needed

Ewan Angus (2 adults, 18 - 23 March, 2010):

Excellent! We had a brilliant stay Alfama River I Apartments. Great location and really comfortable, well-finished accommodation. Couldn't fault it.

Andrew Fletcher (4 adults, 28 February - 3 March, 2010):

Really enjoyed our brief stay. The appartment was great. Top location and the bar next bar is very good. I would use it again when i return. One thing i did forget to say is i forgot to put the bottle opener back in the draw. I only found out at the airport when i got stopped at security!!! Very sorry for that. I'm hoping to return next year same time so i will buy you one then if OK.

Eve Renaud (1 adult, 9 - 17 December, 2009):

I stayed at the Alfama River 1 in december. The apartment was spotless clean.
Great location (Alfama [old center], near the train station but without noise) and with excellent view on the Tagus. Fado bar, supermarket and museums in the vicinity.
I would recommend the place to a friend. Be aware though that this being a vintage house without an elevator, you have to have good legs.
Owners most helpful, at arrival, with follow-up, description of amenities and pointing of helpful services around.

Stefanie Heinze (2 adults, 15 - 21 November, 2009):

We really liked the apartment and especially the views. When the weather wasn't great, it was still a pleasure to just sit and enjoy watching the ships and looking over the rooftops of the city. The location is excellent, close to everything and we really appreciated all the information and support you gave us! We were also delighted to find everything we needed such as salt, pepper, vinegar as well as dishwasher tablets, tea, etc. The apartments itself is lovely as well, with everything looking very new and modern, and it is well presented altogether. The kitchen is quite dark, but the lovely bright sitting room more than made up for it. If we do come back to Lisbon, we will certainly stay here again.
Thanks again for all your help and for telling us about the flea market; I managed to get a charging cable for my camera and for my MP3 player; great relief!!

Sine Brown (2 adults, 26 - 30 October, 2009):

We really loved the apartment, thank you.
The location is great - close to the train, metro and a taxi rank, as well as a supermarket. The apartment itself is great; modern, very light and airy with nice views. Also everything is in excellent condition and there was nothing that we found wanting (having a dishwasher was a real bonus!)

Alessandro Sicoli (2 adults, 16 - 19 October, 2009):

Thank you for everything. We will recommend your houses in Lisbon to all our friends. Best regards, Alessandro and Antonella.

Cordula Alfes (2 September - 6 September, 2009):

We enjoyed our stay very much.
The appartment was really fine, especially the view over the Tejo. That was really the best.
And I liked the way you were attentive to our needs! So we felt really good.
The only thing which did not work 100% in the appartment was the shower, where water dropped out.
And for my parents the stairs were difficult. Maybe it could be an important information to future elderly clients that the stairs are steep.

Our reply:
Dear Cordula,
Thanks very much for your kind comments. And thanks for bringing the leaking shower to our attention - we will of course repair it as soon as possible.
Regarding the steep stairs, yes, this is a regular feauture of houses in the historic Old Town area of Lisbon and we do in fact advise our clients of this in the booking conditions on our website which you agreed to when you reserved the apartment: http://www.lisbonapartments.com/tariffs/#conditions
For some people the steep stairs can be a problem, but we are sure you'll agree that the spectacular views from the apartments are well worth any effort it takes to get to the top.
My parents, who are both 70 years old, have just been in the 4th floor apartment for 4 nights, and they didn't mind at all climbing the stairs every day, because they knew they were going to be able to enjoy watching the passing cruise ships, warships and sail-boats, together with all the other interesting things the river views offer. The only thing they regretted was not bringing binoculars to be able to see even further across the estuary!
In any case, thanks again for your comments, and you know that you are always welcome back if ever your return to Lisbon.

Paco Donado (4 adults, 18 September - 21 September, 2009):

Es muy bonito y muy bien acondicionado, nos gustó mucho. Saludos.

Translation: It's very pretty and very well equipped, we liked it a lot. Regards.

Theresa Kuhn (2 September - 6 September, 2009):

As far as the apartment goes, I really enjoyed staying there. The view is excellent and it is very nicely renovated and furnished. Maybe you could add another lamp in the kitchen, and I personally am always happy to find basic condiments (oil, salt, pepper) and a coffee machine in the apartment.

Our reply:
Hi Theresa,
I'm surprised because normally we do in fact leave oil and salt (perhaps not pepper, but we will do so from now on), so I'm not sure what happened, but we would have happily brought it for you if had you mentioned it, because it's something we always prepare for our clients.
And we will be purchasing a coffee machine this weekend.
Thanks very much for your comments.

Maarten Gribnau (2 adults & 2 children, 29 July - 1 August, 2009):
+ Your service. You were very informative and really quick to react that was very much appreciated
+ The location. The apartment is in the midst of the city.
+ The apartment was nicely decorated
+ The kitchen was well equipped with all new equipment
+ The price
+ The view
+ The tv and free internet (although I could not get Wifi to work)

Our reply:
Hello Maarten,
I'm not sure why you couldn't get the wi-fi to work, because it has worked for all our other guests - perhaps it was a configuration problem on your PC? If you had called us, we would have willingly looked at your laptop for you and for sure we could have got it working.
