This flat is a 4th floor apartment, and one of a pair because we own and rent the 3rd floor apartment also. Both apartments have the same space and facilities and, together with the other two 2-bedroom apartments in the same building, can be rented together if you have a large group. The building is located right next to the traditional Alfama district, and is literally just 2 minutes walk from the Santa Apolonia Metro & Train Station. This apartment, being higher, has even better views of the river, Santa Apolonia station and the Doca do Jardim de Tabaco area of restaurants. Looking to the west, the Cristo Rei statue across the river in Almada can be seen from both the living room and bedroom windows.

The apartment is located next to the Old Town district of Alfama, and just round the corner from the Santa Apolonia Metro & Train station.
This area has plenty of cafeterias, bars, traditional Fado restaurants, as well as the small village-type shops typical of Alfama.
In the Santa Apolonia station there is a "Pingo Doce" supermarket and just opposite the station there is a chemist's (pharmacy).
On the opposite side of the main road, next to the river, there is a large open-air carpark which charges just 4.95 euros per day.
The area is convenient for sight-seeing: you can easily walk to the central Praça do Comercio square in about 15 minutes, and the wonderful "miradouros" (viewpoints) of Alfama, like the Portas do Sol, and Miradouro Santa Luzia are just a 10 minute walk away. The majestic Panteão Nacional (National Pantheon) - where the famous Fado singer Amalia Rodrigues is buried - is just round the corner.
NOTE: This is a 4th floor apartment in an old traditional area of central Lisbon, where the buildings don't have lifts/elevators and is therefore not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with mobility problems.

CUSTOMER COMMENTS & REVIEWS
Lisa & John Goodsell (2 adults, 5 - 10 July, 2011):
My husband and I had a lovely relaxing 6 days. Apartment very easy to reach via taxi from airport, also cheap. Although we arrived late evening, we were in contact with Roger and was met by his assistant who was very helpful. Apartment lovely and clean, sofas could have been a little more comfy. Only one mirror which was in the bathroom, did need another one. There was only the two of us, which was perfect. I'm not sure how 4 adults would feel. Apartment was lovely and central, close to the Metro which was easy to use. Just be aware of the spiral, narrow staircase up to the apartment, be prepared to arrive at the front door, hot and out of breath! Lots of lovely restaurants and cafes to choose from, don't let the exterior and the outside of the restaurants put you off. Had a lovely break, weather perfect. If we return to Lisbon, we would not hesitate to contact Roger and see if the apartment is available. The view was spectacular!
Louis Blech (2 adults, 22 - 25 June, 2011):
View on the river, sunrise, sunset, rooftops. Location in alfama is very good, close to station and also cause alfama is the best place to stay in Lisbon.
Lesley Andrews (2 adults, 24 - 31 May, 2011):
The view of the river, central location, cozy attributes were winners. We very much enjoyed our stay and would recommend the apartment to others. The kitchen is not as well lit as the rest of the apartment, but is quite workable.
Lis Bartosz (2 adults, 19 - 22 May, 2011):
The apartment is best for two people or a couple with two children. Pros: Excellent location - you can get quickly on your foot to the historical centre or to the metro/railway station if you want farther sightseeing. There is a grocery at the station open til 21:30, which saved our lifes after all day sightseeing. The owner of the apartment was helpfull, as there had been no former reservation we could check in few hours earlier. Cons: Be prepared for prettiness of an old house: steep stairs and strange smells. Deciding on accomodation in alfama district keep in mind that these are rather features than drawbacks. All in all in a hotel you won't have Rio Tejo visible from your bed.
Wolfgang Kirchhöfer (2 adults, 10 - 19 April, 2011):
We stayed the second time in the apartment. We most appreciate the good location (close to trains, metro, buses, supermarket, downtown, good and cheap restaurants in the immediate neighbourhood)and the wonderful view over the river on one side and Cristo Rei on the other. The apartment is well equipped even for frequent cookers. Well suitable for a couple plus maybe one kid.
Simone Davis (2 adults, 18 - 20 March, 2011):
We had a great stay at the apartment for two nights in March. Roger is very friendly and helpful and we instantly felt comfortable. The views are beautiful and its very close to heaps of cafes, restaurants and bars. We loved Lisbon and would definitely come back to stay at this great apartment.
Anna Schuster (2 adults, 25 - 27 February, 2011):
My best friend and I enjoyed a very nice weekend, and this apartment has contributed a large part! Very accessible and well located, the apartment is situated in a beautifully renovated and absolutely authentic building. Attention! the stairs are very steep, but you have a baby buggy, just consider it good exercise which will be completely rewarded once you're in the attic! The views of the Tagus are huge. The waves and sailing vessels to make the perfect holiday setting. But back to the apartment. We found a lovely furnished apartment with a well-equipped kitchen. Everything is very bright and friendly. In the area and within walking distance we found great Fado places, bars, flea market, mandarin tree in the middle of the sidewalk, supermarket (open 7 days a week) and absolutely friendly and helpful people. Even elderly ladies who spoke no language other than Portuguese, wanted to answer our questions :-) We were very comfortable and felt welcome and will come again!
Johanna von Arx (2 adults, 25 - 27 February, 2011):
Tony Knowles (2 adults, 6 - 13 February, 2011):
The service and attention from Roger was second to none.He is a very helpful chap. Thanks Roger. The apartment was ideal for two of us and would be ok for 4 people as well. It is ideally placed in the historic part of Lisboa, Alfama with lovely views of the river. There were many fine amenities within a short walking distance and indeed a tapas bar right next door (no trouble at all with noise etc). The centre of Lisboa is a 15 minute walk or thereabouts with plenty of places on the way to sit and people watch whilst having a coffee. The apartment could do with another (large) mirror for the ladies and a couple of bedside cabinets to house glasses of water and early morning coffee etc. That said I would go back.
Binay Thakur (2 adults, 1 child & 1 baby, 25 - 29 December, 2010):
Overall we liked the apartment and would happily recommend to the friends visiting Lisbon.
Jan Coppens (2 adults, 28 September - 2 October, 2010):
Nice place, nice view , I can't think of anything bad.
I think we will come back.
Sharon Bennett (2 adults, 12 - 16 September, 2010):
Krzysztof Gorynski (2 adults, 2 - 9 September, 2010):
If we decide to visit Lisbon again, we would definitely go back to Alfama River Apartment. I think this is the best place to feel "Real Lisbon".
Mike Willner (2 adults, 13 - 20 August, 2010):
We were pleasantly surprised by natural charm of Lisbon especially alfama. It is not at all spoilt by the commercial concessions for tourism that is usual in Europe. Beautiful enchanting local bars and restaurants meet you around every corner, this is a very well established community that is reassuringly safe to wander at any hour. The accommodation is wonderful with views across the river, the french windows afford the top floor flat a very airy feel which is complimented by very bright, modern furnishings. The flat was immaculately clean on arrival, Roger was very personable and helpful.I would highly recommend to anybody.
Bridget Lousa (2 adults & 2 children, 7 - 10 August, 2010):
Thanks for the great flat - it was really comfortable.
Basile Veniel (2 adults & 2 children, 4 - 7 August, 2010):
As I said it to you in my SMS, your apartment was very pleasant. The sight was splendid, the very practical site. With regard to decoration with properly spoken, very pleasant and design… design of the apartment thought very well. While hoping to have answered your request, and if the people whom I know wish to go on Lisbon, I kept your co-ordinates.
Cordially, Basile
Madeleine Rall (2 adults, 22 - 29 July, 2010):
The Appartement was very nice.
The Tapasbar was our "Housebar" and we had a lot of fun.
I think it was nice that you gave your telephonenumber for calling you if there are problems. A nice Trip.
Thanks Madeleine
Jill Capuzzo & EJ Carreiro (2 adults, 1 - 4 July, 2010):
As for feedback, the apartment was really nice, spacious and well provisioned; I would recommend it to friends as a good way to visit Lisbon (and far better than the small hotel room we had in Porto a few nights ago!) The only challenge was the four flights of stairs we had to drag our luggage up. Other than that trip, the other treks up the hill from the train station and the stairs only helped prepare us for the numerous uphill journeys we've encountered throughout Portugal.
We're headed back to the states in a few days, and will really miss this wonderful country.
Brian Lamb (2 adults, 10 - 15 June, 2010):
Rose Pickles (2 adults, 24 - 28 May, 2010):
We thought the apartment was great for our needs. Loved the view, very comfy bed, only used the kitchen for breakfasts so it had everything we needed.
Philippe Desrues (2 adults, 21 - 24 May, 2010):
thanks for your welcome
Philippe and Patricia
Susan Reekie (2 adults, 10 - 17 April, 2010):
BA put us up in the Altis Park which was a huge come down. We cannot praise your apartment enough and very quickly felt at home which we feel is really important for a short break. Apartment was exactly as you described even the stairs but it is well worth the climb for such a beautiful view over the river and the Alfama. We very quickly warmed to the Alfama and its people. Your advice to visit Sr Fado, was well worth it and the little bar next door was very welcoming too. Really appreciated your quick response whilst requesting an extra night and would loved to have stayed longer.
Thanks again and hope to return one day, Susan and John
Liz Fincham (2 adults, 27 March - 3 April, 2010):
Our reply:
Don't know what happened to the previous chopping board, but we have now replaced it.
Virginie Rigaud (2 adults, 12 - 15 March, 2010):
Thank you
Our reply:
Thanks for your comments - we will take a look at the kitchen to see if stronger light bulbs are needed
Ewan Angus (2 adults, 18 - 23 March, 2010):
Andrew Fletcher (4 adults, 28 February - 3 March, 2010):
Eve Renaud (1 adult, 9 - 17 December, 2009):
Great location (Alfama [old center], near the train station but without noise) and with excellent view on the Tagus. Fado bar, supermarket and museums in the vicinity.
I would recommend the place to a friend. Be aware though that this being a vintage house without an elevator, you have to have good legs.
Owners most helpful, at arrival, with follow-up, description of amenities and pointing of helpful services around.
Stefanie Heinze (2 adults, 15 - 21 November, 2009):
Thanks again for all your help and for telling us about the flea market; I managed to get a charging cable for my camera and for my MP3 player; great relief!!
Sine Brown (2 adults, 26 - 30 October, 2009):
The location is great - close to the train, metro and a taxi rank, as well as a supermarket. The apartment itself is great; modern, very light and airy with nice views. Also everything is in excellent condition and there was nothing that we found wanting (having a dishwasher was a real bonus!)
Alessandro Sicoli (2 adults, 16 - 19 October, 2009):
Cordula Alfes (2 September - 6 September, 2009):
The appartment was really fine, especially the view over the Tejo. That was really the best.
And I liked the way you were attentive to our needs! So we felt really good.
The only thing which did not work 100% in the appartment was the shower, where water dropped out.
And for my parents the stairs were difficult. Maybe it could be an important information to future elderly clients that the stairs are steep.
Our reply:
Dear Cordula,
Thanks very much for your kind comments. And thanks for bringing the leaking shower to our attention - we will of course repair it as soon as possible.
Regarding the steep stairs, yes, this is a regular feauture of houses in the historic Old Town area of Lisbon and we do in fact advise our clients of this in the booking conditions on our website which you agreed to when you reserved the apartment:
http://www.lisbonapartments.com/tariffs/#conditions
For some people the steep stairs can be a problem, but we are sure you'll agree that the spectacular views from the apartments are well worth any effort it takes to get to the top.
My parents, who are both 70 years old, have just been in the 4th floor apartment for 4 nights, and they didn't mind at all climbing the stairs every day, because they knew they were going to be able to enjoy watching the passing cruise ships, warships and sail-boats, together with all the other interesting things the river views offer. The only thing they regretted was not bringing binoculars to be able to see even further across the estuary!
In any case, thanks again for your comments, and you know that you are always welcome back if ever your return to Lisbon.
Paco Donado (4 adults, 18 September - 21 September, 2009):
Translation: It's very pretty and very well equipped, we liked it a lot. Regards.
Theresa Kuhn (2 September - 6 September, 2009):
Our reply:
Hi Theresa,
I'm surprised because normally we do in fact leave oil and salt (perhaps not pepper, but we will do so from now on), so I'm not sure what happened, but we would have happily brought it for you if had you mentioned it, because it's something we always prepare for our clients.
And we will be purchasing a coffee machine this weekend.
Thanks very much for your comments.
Maarten Gribnau (2 adults & 2 children, 29 July - 1 August, 2009):
+ The location. The apartment is in the midst of the city.
+ The apartment was nicely decorated
+ The kitchen was well equipped with all new equipment
+ The price
+ The view
+ The tv and free internet (although I could not get Wifi to work)
Our reply:
Hello Maarten,
I'm not sure why you couldn't get the wi-fi to work, because it has worked for all our other guests - perhaps it was a configuration problem on your PC? If you had called us, we would have willingly looked at your laptop for you and for sure we could have got it working.
